Class 3/4 at St Bede’s Catholic Primary School in Darlington launched their new Science topic, ‘Rocks’, this week — and what an exciting start it has been! Stepping into the shoes of real geologists, the children explored a wide range of rock samples and began investigating how different types of rocks are formed.

Their first discovery was igneous rocks — learning that they form when hot, melted rock cools and solidifies. To help them understand the process, pupils were encouraged to try making honeycomb at home, watching how melted sugar bubbles and hardens into solid pieces. A fun and tasty way to see science in action!

Next, the class explored sedimentary rocks, examining the layers and tiny fragments that build up over time. They were amazed to learn how fossils are created, forming when plants or animals become trapped and preserved within these layers.

The children loved investigating real samples, comparing textures, colours and patterns as they built their scientific vocabulary and observation skills.

If you come across any interesting rocks while you’re out and about, we’d be delighted for the children to bring them in — Class 3/4 would love to share and study your finds!
